Sounds of Silence

Twenty miles into the BWCA
an old red pine falls
crashing to the forest floor.

Birds respond first
to the crack of the old pine
as a few small critters flee
to the sounds of the falling tree
two wolves come closer.

“If a tree falls in a forest
and no one is around to hear it,
does it make a sound?”
